Profile of Artist: "Carla Maritz born in Pretoria , is an exceptional artist who understands and relates to how all ethnic and other South Africans live. She has worked many years as a graphic artist illustrating text books for the South African schools curriculum and managing and briefing other artists to do quality work for her clients. Her clients have ranged from Nasou via Africa ,Maskew Miller Longman and many other large and smaller publishers . She is extremely dedicated to getting the facts of her designs just right . Through her socialness she has discovered , that there is a huge untapped potential, niche in the market for her work . She heads the operations of Eish Studio as this is her vision and idea . In doing so she also improves the living conditions of others , which drives her . She is a qualified artist that went to the Art Ballet and Music school where she passed with Art (and other subjects) with distinction; she then went on to study at the Pretoria Technicon, Carla also has experience in a managerial position Director for 3D Girls which operated until recently in Pretoria and Cape Town. Carla has successfully managed its operations in both cities for several years. Noticeably ,she treats all people from various spheres of life as equals."
Over two years ago I began Eish Studio cc with the trademark "Woza South Africa". The initial inspiration - was a very good friend of mine who had recently adopted a baby girl (both of whom I love dearly), my friend could not find any art /cards representing her daughters skin color or our "New more Modern South Africa ". And so "Eish Studio" the idea and concept was born! I taught myself to move from the canvas world Id known to the computer . Amazingly gradually it opened up a whole new world of art expression for me , whereby I could mix all my mediums together- painting, drawing, photography etc and slowly see my visions emerge in front of me. So this is how the computer has now become my tool for creativity .Inspiration in general for my work is Africa , its people and wildlife - what else do I need !? I love to capture the vibrancy and differences of our continent to that of other countries , as I believe we have so much to offer . You may notice, the use color as one of my main "tools" , in my quest to capture this . As for myself “personally” , it's been great to be able to use my “artistic license” without someone else's parameters for a change , and this has been most liberating . With the Eish Collection - I hope to showcase the beauty and wonders of the ‘Rainbow Nation’ .
My most recent motto -
"Exert your talents, and distinguish yourself, and don't think of retiring from the world, until the world will be sorry that you retire." Anon

I'll try to spare you the boring bits... so let me get the educational bits out of the way first. I finished high school with distinctions in Biology and English. I then went on to university. Because I wanted to be rich I decided to take Psychology... erm... that did not work out because I'm not much of a people's person ..lol - so I got a BA degree in Communication from the University of the Free State instead (1997). I subsequently went about trying to forget all I'd spent learning at varsity for 3 years , as I had finally found my true calling which was art... particularly graphic art.I started my working career doing odd jobs for my brother, Ernst, who had just started his own animation and video productions company, Shearwater Cartoons and Animations in Bloemfontein... the smallest little big city in the middle of South Africa in the Free State Province. There I learned a lot. I helped him with the coloring for animation jobs for the Free State Local Government Training. First was the GRASS ROOTS animation (1996), using the Amiga Platform. For which we won the Silver Avanti Craft Award from NTVA. I also learned how to do video editing using the VM Studio Light hybrid video editing suite, and to make my own titles with Micrographix 3D. I also took over the Graphic Design department and learned how to use CorelDraw when my brother decided to move to Gauteng. We also made a couple of training videos. I worked as scriptwriter, production assistant, graphic artist and video editor. The entire Shearwater Productions moved down to Knysna in the Southern Cape to become the in house graphic and video production studio of The African Flame, a company that tried to promote new patents. There I made presentations on Corel Presentations and Power Point and designed logos, letterheads and business cards and did a lot of DTP work as well.
The company unfortunatly went belly up and I moved back to Bloemfontein . I moved up to Gauteng where I worked freelance as a graphic designer, mural painter and illustrator for 3D Girls./(Carla Maritz) . I found steady work at a signage company, where I did graphics (CorelDraw 9-13) and a lot of repro work for use on the vinyl cutting machine. I also started learning how to make web sites (Macromedia Flash and Dreamweaver and Fireworks 8. After that I got a job at a company that does branding on clothes like Blue Bull shirts and so on and so forth… a lot of the same as I did before, with a LOT more admin thrown in (MEH!!!) The pay was better though… I also do vectorizing for E-Stitch in CT who uses them for embroidery.I have been working for Carla for six plus years on a freelance basis , doing artwork .I had to learn to use Photoshop for painting because of her, it’s a good thing too because if she didn’t I’d still be only threatening to learn it!

“Nothing exists until or unless it is observed. An artist is making something exist by observing it. And his hope for other people is that they will also make it exist by observing it. I call it creative observation.” I matriculated in ’99, receiving 92% for Art. As you can see, art is really a passion of mine. I took part in various competitions and I won the Beeld Eistedford award twice and I sold my first painting at the age of 16. went to TUKS after school to study Information design. I loved illustrating the most and realized this is where my passion lies. I changed direction from graphic design to fine arts at UNISA.I have done courses in fashion design and took a course at UNISA in Photoshop and Corel draw.I have been working for Carla (3D Girls) for about 6 years. I also had the privilege to work with names like Nasou via Afrika, MML, Heinemann etc.I was bitten by the travel bug during my last trip to Europe. There is so much to see in the World I am very excited about my next trip overseas.I am currently studying teaching part-time and I illustrate and paint for a living, and will always stay involved with that which I am passionate about…… namely ART!! “The aim of every artist is to arrest motion, which is life, by artificial means and hold it fixed so that a hundred years later, when a stranger looks at it, it moves again since it is life”
